Biography of A. Matthew Mazzoni

Pianist A. Matthew Mazzoni enjoys a diverse career as a keyboard artist artist across the United States and beyond.  Whether performing as solo artist, concerto soloist, or collaborator, his performances have been noted by a sensitive artistry in a wide repertoire that spans from the late Renaissance through world premiers and recent contemporary pieces.


As a collaborative artist, his performance experience includes significant repertoire for every wind, brass, and string instrument, with notable collaborators including flutists Gary Schocker and Tadeu Coelho, brass soloist Stephen Mead, and St. Louis musicians Diana Haskil, Martha Hart, and Eric Harris.  A recent recording with flutist Kyle Dzapo appears on the NAXOS label, and additional recordings are to be released, with clarinetist Scott Locke and euphonium soloist Brandon Jones.  He also performs frequently as a duo with his wife, flutist Jennifer Toro Mazzoni.


In the St. Louis area, Mazzoni has appeared in concert at Christ Church Cathedral, the MUNI, the Sheldon Concert Hall, the Missouri Botanical Garden (broadcast on “From the Garden, LIVE”), the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, the Eliot Chapel, and Winnifred E. Moore Auditorium.  He has served as the pianist for several choral ensembles, including The Sheldon Chorale, the Arhdiocesan Choir, and the Archdiocesan Children’s Chorus.


As an educator, Mr. Mazzoni formerly served on the faculty of Murray State University where he was the collaborative piano specialist and taught courses in music theory, keyboard, and accompanying.  His teaching also includes precollege music programs in Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Indiana, and Pennsylvania.  Currently, he is an adjunct faculty member of the Webster University Department of Music.


Mr. Mazzoni completed his graduate study at Indiana University with Shigeo Neriki, earning his Master of Music degree and Performer Diploma.  He holds two undergraduate degrees from the University of Michigan in Piano and Music Theory, where his major teacher was Arthur Greene.  Additional musical studies include work with master teachers Yehovid Kaplinski, Julian Martin, Yong-Hi Moon, and Marianne Ploger.


Currently Mr. Mazzoni is the Director of Liturgical Music at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, where he serves as the director of a diversity of choral and instrumental ensembles, as well as the principal organist.  Additional church music experience includes serving as the organist for several major events at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis.  He and his wife Jennifer are the proud parents of two children and make their home in St. Louis, MO.
